Homeschooling Consultations
Basic Homeschooling | Special Needs Homeschooling
There are a number of different types of consultations that I offer to homeschoolers (prospective, new, and veterans). Primarily, I offer consultations for those who do not wish to enroll in the BayShore School private ISP, either because they are enrolled in another program (including public charters), or they have filed their own private school affidavit with the California Department of Education. These consultations would include (but not limited to):
I also work with families whose children have learning or other disorders that interfere with educational processes. Your child may already have been diagnosed by a medical or mental health professional, or your child's school has requested permission to test, or you just suspect that something is amiss - regardless, if you opt to homeschool your child and are looking for insights - I have the combined experience of being a special needs parent, and advanced training in psychology. However, I am not a licensed practitioner and will not diagnose or treat.
Learning Plan Development for Special Needs These children may have previously been enrolled in public school settings where they had Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) outlining goals and objectives for their learning progress. While it is not legally necessary to continue this requirement for independent homeschooling (those enrolled in private ISPs or who file single-family private school affidavits), many families like to transition to homeschooling with some of the familiar aspects of traditional schooling. BayShore School offers the following services to both enrolled and non-enrolled homeschooling families:
Learning Plan Development (non-SPED)
Basically, the same as above, but for children who do not possess special needs or learning disabilities. Services available to BayShore School enrolled and non-enrolled children. Families currently enrolled with the BayShore School program receive one (1) hour consultation per month included with the tuition costs.
In Person Consultations Cost: $50.00/per hour for in-person consultation. The in-person fee can be paid at the time of the session. I work out of a rental house in Long Beach (near Recreation Park - intersection of 7th Street and Park Avenue), and am generally available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays (occasionally on Mondays). The address and directions will be provided by email when appointment is scheduled. Please provide me with at least three (3) dates/times that work best for you, and I will get back to you.
Phone Consultations To schedule a phone consult, again, provide me with at least three (3) days/times that work for you, and I will email you with one that works for me. You will phone me at that scheduled time. Cost for a basic first-time consult is $25.00/per 30 minute segment by phone, and this needs to be paid in advance. Checks should be made payable to BayShore School And mailed to: BayShore School
None of the coaching sessions or consult meetings should be construed as psychotherapy.
Business Consultations
I am frequently called upon by those who wish to start homeschooling businesses, such as private independent study programs (ISP), learning materials, and by already established businesses that want to target the homeschooling market. I developed BayShore School in 1992 and have been operating it ever since. I am available for serious business consultations only. I do not offer gratis advice - so please do not ask for it. Fees will be determined based on services.
About Lenore Colacion Hayes, M.S.
In addition to my graduate training in psychology and education, I bring a wealth of experience from 20+ years of parenting, as well as from my previous career as a manager and publicist in the record industry. I parented (and homeschooled) my Asperger Syndrome son (now a young adult). My experiences with him have created an understanding of the difficulties in negotiating through meltdowns, wars-of-wills, and sensory intolerances. My life has also benefited from the innumerable rewards of parenting this young individual as he has grown into an empathic, creative, and loving adult. Difficult journeys often bring unexpected and enriching side-trips. Prior to returning to college to pursue studies in psychology, I spent the first decade of my adult life working in the record industry. I served as manager/publicist/producer for local progressive rock bands in the late 1970s and 1980s; in addition, I also worked as a music publicist for an independent Solters & Roskin, a Los Angeles PR agency, and also for Epic Records. Additionally, I started a small independent record company that produced one album of acoustic guitar music. As a graduate student I spent two years as a teaching assistant for Alan Lowenthal Ph.D. (currently a California State Senator) in his upper division abnormal psychology classes. I was a National Hispanic Scholarship recipient while in grad school; and graduated with a Master of Science in community and clinical psychology. My research interests were in the fields of cross-cultural psychology, human development, and educational policy. In 2002, I authored a book on homeschooling special needs children for Prima Publishing/Random House. After graduation, I spent a few years practicing psychotherapy (with specialties in personality disorders, as well as Asperger's Syndrome), but ultimately decided to stop. Currently, I continue to run BayShore School, write nonfiction, and dabble with a bit of music PR. |
